Bathroom Lighting Buying Guide
![]() |
When you're looking to brighten up your bathroom with a complete lighting scheme, it's best to start with area to which light is most important: the vanity. Here, you'll want to go for the bright, shadow-free light offered by vertical wall sconces and above-vanity lighting - and from there, you have some room to play. Experts recommend "layering" bathroom light for practical use and general aesthetics. Shower and tub lighting provide both task and mood lighting; be sure to look for lights with a wet UL listing. Bathroom ceiling lights can include either a single source, such as a chandelier, or a series of recessed fixtures to diffuse light throughout the entire bathroom. Liner fixtures under vanities and cabinets offer night lights; fiber optic ceiling fixtures can add a playful twinkle to dark bathrooms, too. Additional spotlighting over commodes is something else to consider, as well as pure accent lighting on particular design features in the bathroom. |
Be sure, too, to utilize any natural light to the fullest; opt for sheer window coverings or blinds, or outfit windows with frosted glass to allow light in while preserving needed privacy.
Check with your local building inspectors and electrical codes before installing lights, and bear in mind the restrictions placed on some light fixture placement. A table or floor lamp, for example, should be placed a safe distance from any water source. Other fixtures, too, may need to have at least a damp UL listing as they may be subject to periodic condensation.
